About Khatu Shyam Ji Temple
Khatu
Shyam Ji temple is dedicated to Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima and son of
Ghatotkacha from the Mahabharata. Devotees across Rajasthan and beyond know him
as Shyam Baba or Haare Ka Sahara, the one who stands by those who have lost
hope. The
temple
draws lakhs of visitors every month and during special events, footfall crosses
several lakhs in a single day.
The
presiding deity here is a head (Sheesh) which according to tradition was
offered by Barbarika himself before the Kurukshetra war. The idol is installed
inside the main sanctum and the darshan experience is considered deeply
personal by most who visit. Many devotees travel from across the country
specifically for Ekadashi darshan and the Phalgun Mela held every year around
Holi.
Tourist Attractions Around Khatu Shyam
Khatu Shyam Ji Temple is the main
reason most people make this journey. The temple complex is well-maintained,
the architecture follows traditional Rajasthani style, and the atmosphere during
morning and evening aarti is something most visitors remember for a long time.
Shyam Kund is a sacred water
tank right next to the temple. Devotees take a holy dip here before entering
the main shrine. The kund holds religious significance tied directly to the
legend of Barbarika and is considered one of the most important parts of the
visit.
Gopinath Temple is located near
the main temple and is an older structure that sees regular worshippers
alongside the Khatu Shyam darshan crowd. It is worth a visit if you have time
after the main darshan.
Ringas Town is a short
distance from Khatu and serves as the nearest railway junction. If you are
travelling by road, you pass through Ringas on the way and it has decent food
options for a quick halt before or after the temple.
Salasar Balaji is roughly 60
kilometres from Khatu Shyam. Many devotees combine both pilgrimages in one
trip, and we can arrange a round-trip cab covering both temples on the same day
if needed.

Best Time to Visit Khatu Shyam Ji
The
temple is open throughout the year but certain periods draw significantly
larger crowds and carry a different energy altogether.
Phalgun Mela (February to
March) is the biggest annual gathering at Khatu Shyam Ji. It falls
around the Holi period and runs for several days. Lakhs of devotees from across
Rajasthan and neighbouring states attend. Roads get heavily congested during
this time so leaving Jaipur very early in the morning is the only way to avoid
traffic near the temple.
Ekadashi falls twice every month
and is considered the most auspicious day for Khatu Shyam darshan. The temple
sees heavy footfall on every Ekadashi, especially Nirjala Ekadashi and Saphala
Ekadashi.
Janmashtami and Holi bring large
gatherings and special decorations inside the temple complex. These are good
times to visit if you want to experience the festive atmosphere.
Regular Days (Monday to
Sunday, excluding festivals) are the best option if you want a peaceful
darshan without long queues. Weekday mornings are the least crowded and allow
enough time for a calm visit before heading back.
For
a comfortable and unhurried experience, weekday visits between September and
February work best. Avoid arriving between 10 AM and 1 PM on weekends as queues
tend to be longest during that window.
